Why is it dangerous?
On December 17, 2004, Pfizer announced that results from a recent study indicated Celebrex more than doubled the risk of suffering heart attack and stroke. Although the study results are disturbing, Pfizer also released a statement indicating that the company has no plans to issue a Celebrex recall.
This news comes less than three months after Merck recalled Vioxx, a similar drug. Vioxx was withdrawn in September 2004 after reports that the drug significantly increased the risk of heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, angina pectoris, peripheral vascular events, ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding.
