Zyprexa
What is Zyprexa?
Zyprexa is the brand name for a medication manufactured by Eli Lilly and prescribed in the treatment of schizophrenia, acute bipolar mania, and maintenance treatment in bipolar disorder. The scientific name for Zyprexa is olanzapine.
Although it is not entirely clear how psychotropic medications work in the body, it is believed that Zyprexa works by adjusting the imbalance of chemicals in the brain that may cause symptoms.
Researchers, however, have determined that taking Zyprexa may increase a person’s risk of developing diabetes and hyperglycemia.
Why is it dangerous?
Recently, the FDA requested that Eli Lilly include warnings about these sometimes fatal Zyprexa side effects. To date the FDA has received hundreds of reports of diabetes linked to Zyprexa use, with the majority of cases appearing within six months of beginning treatment.
